In this blog post, I have a gorgeous project to share with you that will help keep your home tidy and your rooms organised. These cute crochet nesting baskets also make great gifts either by themselves or filled with treats as a hamper!
You could customise the colours so they match your home or the person you are making them for and fill them with all kinds of goodies depending what the recipient loves. These nesting baskets would also make a gorgeous baby shower gift either containing self care gifts for mum or baby bits ready for a new arrival.
Personally, I would love to receive something handmade like this filled with goodies. My baskets are filled with various things around the home, from holding my Beauty essentials, to my crochet hooks. You could use one as a super pretty plant pot, organise the kids toys or keep together all of your baby items in a nursery. Keep reading as I have a bonus video and more inspiration further down.
what will I learn?
As part of this blog post, there is a written pattern available you can find the link further down. Please note this isn’t my design, this was originally a collaboration however I have a video tutorial to help guide you step by step. In addition to showing you how crochet the nesting basket step by step, I’ll be walking you through the written pattern, so if you want to improve your pattern reading skills this is perfect for you!
tools & materials
The yarn I used for this project is Lily Sugar ‘n Cream in the shade Potpourri. I love the quality of this yarn, especially the Pink, Purple and Teal flecks of colour. These baskets are created using 2 strands of yarn together, which creates a much sturdier basket.
terms & abbreviations
- Chain(s): ch(s): Yarn over, then pull through.
- Slip Stitch(s): ss: Insert hook, yarn over, then pull through stitch and loop on hook.
- Double Crochet(s): dc(s): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Finally, Yarn over and then pull through remaining two loops.

pattern notes
- Skill Level: Beginner
- Gauge: 12 sc and 13 rows = 4″ [10 cm] with 2 strands of yarn worked together.
- You will find a small, medium and large option to create as part of the pattern.
- Written in US terms, however in the video I will be working in UK terms. It’s really handy to get to grips with both sets of terms as it can help you out a lot in the future.
- Join all rnds with sl st to first sc.

I’m just thinking I could do some to have in my kitchen on my new shelves (when I eventually get them in) as part of the pretty, just for display type area. May also do some for the small one for her little trinkets and hair bits and bobs.

One question that I have that I can’t find the answer to in the written instructions is when you slip stitch to join your row and then chain one does that chain one count as your first single crochet? So for example on a medium you should have 40 single crochets if that chain one counts is a single crochet then you actually only add 39. My Stitch count keeps coming out different on every row.

April 2, 2020 at 2:32 pmHi Dorothy The chain one doesn’t count as a stitch which is why we make our first single crochet into the base of the chain It can be really easy to get mixed up on the stitch count when working in the round like this – are you making sure to use a stitch marker to mark out that very first stitch in the round? Hope this helps 🙂

I was also considering making some placements using the same technique. I’ve found though that my work looks gappy in places between the rounds – isn’t this because the yarn isn’t right for this project, or because of my technique? I’m using an 8mm crochet hook and the yarn is pretty chunky. Thanks again

August 30, 2020 at 8:47 pmHi Gemma, you are very welcome – thank you so much for your kind words . If your work is looking gappy I would hazard a guess that the hook you are using is too big. I would try going down a hook size to a 7mm or even a 6.5mm and this should sort it

December 19, 2020 at 5:06 pmHi Caitlin You are welcome As long as you are using the same weight yarn it should work out fine, you will just have less stitch definition with acrylic yarn compared to the cotton.

November 9, 2021 at 7:47 pmYou’re welcome, I’m glad you find my tutorials helpful You don’t say which type of yarn you’re using, but this is the first thing I would look at – cotton yarn, for example, is much more sturdy than acrylic. You could also use two strands of yarn held together which will reinforce the sides.
