Crochet this cute little butterfly with my free beginner friendly pattern and video tutorial. In this blog, I will share with you how versatile these crochet embellishments are and some projects they can be used for and added to. You could make a few and chain them together as bunting or perhaps making one into a brooch by adding a safety pin. You could try making a piece of jewellery or simply add a sweet detail to a scarf or hat – the possibilities really are endless with crochet embellishments.

  • Ch 3, tc into centre circle, *ch 2, 2 tc into centre circle* 7 times and then ch 2. Insert hook into third chain from the bottom and then join with slip stitch. Now, you should have 8 clusters of 2 treble stitches.
  • Change colour if desired connecting new colour in treble space.
  • *6tr into chain 2 space, ss in treble space* 7 times, 6tr into ch 2 space, ss into top of original stitch to connect and then ch 8.

making the butterfly

  • Fold the work in half (wrong sides facing) and then wrap the chain around the work connecting at the base of the chain with a slip stitch and then tie off.
  • Take a piece of yarn about 2 inches in length and tie a knot on each end. Slip the yarn under the chain and then move into desired place.
  • You can now sew on a brooch fitting or alternatively attach a safety pin in order to turn into a brooch furthermore, you could sew it on another project!

Thank you so much for posting the video it was very instructive and clear. I found the written directions to be confusing and not at all like the video instructions. I love this little butterfly the way the video shows.

Just to note – your pattern says ch 2, tr crochet into circle 7 times, but in your video you say that you’re doing ch2 and then 2 tr crochets into the circle, and that you should end up with 8 sets of 2 tr at the end of the first round. The pattern as currently written doesn’t do that. Thank you for the great tutorial video though!

    Hi,

Is there any chance there’s going to be a left-handed version of this video? I tried following along to this version, but my butterfly looks a little sad.

    Thanks!

Hi Linda I work in UK terms, so a UK treble is a US double, (it does actually tell you this in the video). Good luck with your butterfly 🙂

Love this little butterfly- I have used this pattern numerous times to enhance crocheted hats, scarves and ponchos for my granddaughters.
I use variegated wool for the butterflies – so adorable . Thanks so much for the free pattern and the tutorial!
