Snowflake Crochet Poncho

We all love a poncho, right? There’s something so cosy about a wearable blanket. But don’t worry, we’re not in slanket territory here (no judgement, slankets are SO COSY, but you might not want to wear one to the supermarket!) This guest design by the supremely talented Aly of Love Aly takes the classic crochet poncho and makes it modern. With a timeless colour palette and beautifully crisp, minimal detail, the Snowflake Crochet Poncho is the classiest cover-up you’ll find this year.

Aly herself says, “I remember the go-to activity at school was always cutting out paper snowflakes as the weather outside became colder. Just a few little snips into paper and fantastic decorations were born! I used to hang them up by my window and dream of snow covered landscapes where school would be cancelled and sledging down the hills at the park would be the mandatory activity of the day. Inspired by my love of winter, I designed this poncho to mimic the coldest aspects of my favourite season. Using spider stitch to imitate patterns of frost on glass, this poncho is finished with a decorative edging, reminiscent of the paper snowflakes of my childhood.“

MATERIALS & TOOLS NEEDED

Yarn: Aran weight yarn. The pattern uses King Cole Forest in Balvian Woods (MC) and Hartwood Forest (CC). You could also use Stylecraft Special Aran or Paintbox Simply Aran.

You will need 4 (4, 5, 6) balls of MC and 2 (2, 2, 3) balls of CC.

Hook: 5mm

Scissors

Tapestry needle

GAUGE

4sts x 3 rows = 1” in pattern

CROCHET TERMS

Chain Stitch (ch): Insert hook, yarn over, pull though loop on the hook.

Chain Space(ch-sp)

Slip Stitch (ss): Insert hook into space, yarn over and pull through stitch and loop on hook

Double Crochet (dc): Insert hook through stitch, yarn over, pull through chain stitch (2 loops on the hook), yarn over, pull through two loops on the hook

Treble Crochet (tr): Yarn over, Insert hook through stitch, yarn over, pull through chain stitch (3 loops on the hook), yarn over, pull through two loops on the hook, yarn over, pull through remaining 2 loops.

SNOWFLAKE CROCHET PONCHO PATTERN

Using MC yarn, Ch 61 (65, 69, 73)

In 3rd ch from hook work (1dc, 1ch, 1dc). miss 1 ch, (1dc, 1ch, 1dc) in next ch. Repeat
from * to * to last 2ch. Skip 1ch and dc in last st. Turn.

Ch2, skip first 2sts. [1dc, 1ch, 1dc] in each other ch-sp across. 1dc in top of ch2 from previous
row.

Repeat row 2 until 321 (337, 345, 361) rows total. FO.

Using CC yarn.

Join yarn to longest side of rectangle and DC across longest side to opposite corner.
321 (337, 345, 361) sts. Turn.

Ch1, dc, Ch1, miss 1, dc, ch5, miss 3, dc, ch3, miss 3, dc. Repeat from * to * until 6 sts
left. Ch5, miss 3, dc, Ch1, miss 1, dc. Turn.

Ch1, dc, 11tr in 5ch-sp. Working over 3ch-sp from previous row, dc into centre st 2 rows below. repeat across until 1 5ch-sp and 1ch-sp remains. 11tr in 5ch-sp, miss 1ch-sp
and dc in final st. Turn.

Ch6 (counts as ttr + ch2), miss 3tr of 11tr-cluster from previous row, dc in next tr, ch3,
miss 3tr, dc in next st. ch5, miss 7sts, dc in next st, ch3, miss 3tr, dc in next st. Repeat
from * to * until last 4 sts. Ch2, miss 3sts, ttr in last st. Turn.

Ch3, 5tr in ch2-sp. Working over 3ch-sp from previous row, dc in centre st 2 rows below, 11tr in next 5ch-sp. Repeat from * to * until 2 ch-sps remain. Dc into 3ch-sp, 6 dc
into final ch-sp. Turn.

Ch1, dc, Ch1, miss 1, dc. Ch5, miss 7, dc, ch3, miss 3, dc. Repeat from * to * until 10
sts remain. Ch5, miss 7, dc, Ch1, miss 1, dc. Turn.

Repeat Rows 3 – 6, 1(1, 1, 2) more times ending on Row 5.

Seaming

Fold the poncho in half so that the two shortest sides of the MC yarn are on top of each other.

With WS facing, seam using dc or mattress stitch up the top side of the folded rectangle, leaving
an opening of your desired size for your head.

Attach your decorative buttons to the poncho down the seamed edge as desired.
