Learn how to Crochet a Wild Berry Crochet Mandala

What could be more Summery than berries? A HUGE bowl of strawberries and cream is peak British Summer snacking. I know, I know, you’re wondering…what the heck does this have to do with crochet? Stay with me. Today I’m sharing a beautiful mandala pattern from my guest designer Zoe from Confessions of a Yarnaholic. This berry awesome crochet mandala is inspired by the vibrant colours of berries and the cute bobble texture emulates a berry texture.

MATERIALS & TOOLS NEEDED

Yarn: 

6x skeins of Scheepjes Cahlista (50g) in your chosen colourway.

You will use between 5g and 15g of each colour (approx.)

The colours recommended in this pattern are as follows:

PATTERN NOTES

Written in US terms

You require knowledge of some special stitches to complete this crochet mandala pattern, including front post double crochet, picot and popcorn stitches.

* * Repeat all instructions between the asterisks the number of times specified. Instructions between asterisks are usually for the full round.

( ) Repeat all instructions between the parenthesis. Instructions between parentheses are usually worked in the same chain, stitch or space.

{ } Total amount of stitches per round.

[ ] Chaining instructions.

This pattern is written in the round. It does not require turning after each round.

You can choose to start each round by chaining or by using standing stitches. The chaining method has been used throughout this pattern, however when joining a new colour, you may wish to use standing stitches instead.

The chain stitch at the beginning of each row counts as a stitch throughout the pattern, unless otherwise stated.

When working rounds 4 and 8 (popcorn rounds), ensure the chain spaces are crocheted loosely.

Crochet Mandala – Wild Berry

CROCHET TERMS

Chain (ch): Yarn over, pull through one loop on hook

Slip stitch (sl-st): Insert hook, yarn over, pull through both stitch and loop on hook.

Single Crochet (sc): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through two loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through both loops.

Double Crochet (dc): Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

Front Post Double Crochet (Fpdc): Yarn over, insert hook around post of stitch from front to back to front, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

Back loops only (BLO)

SPECIAL STITCHES

Popcorn stitch: work 5 dc, drop the loop from hook, insert hook in the first of 5 dc’s from front to back, pull dropped loop through.

Picot: ch 3, sl st in the 1st ch stitch.

WILD BERRY CROCHET MANDALA PATTERN

With colour A, form a magic ring [or ch 4, sl st in fourth ch to make a ring].

Round 1: Ch 1 [does not count as a stitch], 12 sc in magic ring. Finish with a sl st in first sc. {12 sc}

Round 2: Ch 4 [counts as dc, ch 1]. *dc, ch 1 in next sc*. Repeat from * to * 10 more times. Finish with a sl st in 3rd ch of the first dc. Fasten off colour A. {12 dc, 12 ch1}

Round 3: Join colour B around ch 1 space. Ch 4 [counts as dc, ch 1], dc in same ch 1 space. *(dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch 1 space*. Repeat from * to * 10 more times.  Finish with a sl st in 3rd ch of the first dc. {24 dc, 12 ch1}

Round 4: Sl st into ch 1 space. Ch 3 [counts as first dc of popcorn st], 4 dc in same ch 1 space, form first popcorn st, ch 3. *popcorn st in next ch 1 space, ch 3*. Repeat from * to * 10 more times. Finish with a sl st in 3rd ch of the first dc. Fasten off colour B. {12 popcorn st, 12 ch3}

Round 5: Join colour C around ch 3 space. Ch 3 [counts as dc], 3 dc in same ch 3 space, fpdc around popcorn st. *4 dc in ch 3 space, fpdc around popcorn st*. Repeat from * to * 10 more times. Finish with a sl st in 3rd ch of the first dc. {48 dc, 12 fpdc}

Round 6: In BLO. Ch 1 [does not count as a stitch], sc in next 4 dc, 2 sc in fpdc. *sc in next 4 dc, 2 sc in fpdc*. Repeat from * to * 10 more times. Finish with a sl st in first sc. in Fasten off colour C. {72 sc}

Round 7: Join colour D in sc above fpdc of round 5. Ch 5 [counts as dc, ch 2], dc in same st, sk 2 sc, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next sc, sk 2 sc . *(dc, ch 2, dc), sk 2 sc, (dc, ch 1, dc) sk 2 sc*. Repeat from * to * 10 more times. Finish with a sl st in 3rd ch of first dc. {48 dc, 12 ch2, 12 ch1}

Round 8: Sl st into ch 2 space. Ch 3 [counts as first dc of popcorn st], 4 dc in same ch 2 space, form first popcorn, ch 3. Popcorn st in next ch 1 space, ch 3. *popcorn st in next ch 2 space, ch 3, popcorn st in next ch 1 space, ch 3*. Repeat from * to * 10 more times. Finish with a sl st in 3rd ch of the first dc. Fasten off colour D. {24 popcorn st, 24 ch3}

Round 9: Join colour E around ch 3 space. Ch 3 [counts as dc], 3 dc in same ch 3 space, fpdc around popcorn st, 3 dc in next ch 3 space, fpdc around popcorn st. *4dc in next ch 3 space, fpdc around popcorn st, 3 dc in next ch 3 space, fpdc around popcorn st*. Repeat from * to * 10 more times. Finish with a sl st in 3rd ch of the first dc. {84 dc, 24 fpdc}

Round 10: In BLO. Ch 1 [does not count as a stitch], sc in next 4 dc, sc in fpdc, sc in next 3 dc, 2 sc in next fpdc. *sc in next 4 dc, sc in fpdc, sc in next 3 dc, 2 sc in next fpdc*. Repeat from * to * 10 more times. Finish with a sl st in first sc. Fasten off colour E. {120 sc}

Round 11: Join colour F in sc above 1st fpdc of round 9. Ch 7 [counts as dc, ch 4], dc in same st, sk 4 sc, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next sc, sk 4 sc. *(dc, ch 4, dc) in next sc, sk 4 sc, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next sc, sk 4 sc*. Repeat from * to * 10 more times. Finish with a sl st in 3rd ch of the first dc. {48 dc, 12 ch4, 12 ch3}

Round 12: Sl st into ch 4 space. Ch 3 [counts as dc], 5 dc in same ch 4 space, picot, 6 dc in same ch space, sl st in next ch 3 space. *(6 dc, picot, 6 dc) in next ch 4 space, sl st in next ch 3 space*. Repeat from * to * 10 more times. Finish with a sl st in 3rd ch of the first dc. Fasten off colour F. {144 dc, 12 picot, 12 sl st}

Finishing

Once you have completed round 12, your crochet mandala is complete! Weave in all ends. For best results, it is recommended that you block your work.
