Learn how to crochet this beautiful, intricate tunic by guest designer Roseanna of @moara_crochet who creates beautiful crochet clothing with a bohemian style. Roseanna has kindly designed The Gracie Tunic for the blog and the pattern is available for free!
The Gracie crochet tunic has been designed in a classic shape, with a French style boatneck opening and the surface design was inspired by the graceful form of a swan. The beautiful pattern repeat creates a stunning lacy fan design which is perfect for your warmer weather wardrobe. There is an optional crochet belt included in the pattern which adds definition to the waist.

warm weather crochet
When it comes to choosing yarn for crocheting wearables that you want to wear in warmer weather I always recommend using a natural fibre for two reasons. Firstly, natural fibres are able to breathe in higher temperatures. Secondly, natural fibres also have excellent moisture-wicking qualities which is ideal for wearing your crochet in warmer weather.
However, just be aware that natural fibres such as cotton and bamboo often have less elasticity than acrylic or wool which means they don’t stretch as much as acrylic yarns. So I always recommend completing a test swatch before starting your project especially when using cotton yarn for wearables.

MATERIALS & TOOLS
- Yarn: Circulo Charme: Sport weight yarn
- Depending on the size you make, you will need 550, 600, 650, 700, 750 meters of sports weight, see size chart below

- Written in US crochet terms.
- The top is made top down or two identical panels.
- Pattern is created from a 4 row repeat which can be shorted or lengthened to your desired size.
- Long tails are left at the beginning and the end which are used to seam the side and shoulders using whip stitch.
- An optional belt can be added to your top to add more definition to the waist.
- Pattern skill level: advanced beginner.
- Gauge: 20 stitches x 8 rows (dc stitch over 10 x 10cm square)

- XS – S: Chain 70 (2 x 40cm width x 55cm length)
- S – M: Chain 86 (2 x 50cm width x 55cm length)

CROCHET TERMS and abbreviations
- Chain (ch): Yarn over, pull through one loop on the hook.
- Single Crochet (sc): Insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up loop (you will have 2 loops on the hook), yarn over, pull through both loops.
- Double Crochet (dc): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
- Double Crochet Puff Stitch (dc puff): *Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, draw back through the stitch, yarn over, draw through 2 loops on hook* repeat from * to * 2 more times in the same st. Yarn over, draw through all 4 loops on hook.

CROCHET TUNIC PATTERN
FRONT panel
You will need to leave a long tail measuring 50cm before starting the foundation chain because you will use this long tail end to seam the shoulders together.
Row 1: Chain 70, (86, 102, 118), 134) sc in the 2nd from the hook, *ch5, skip 3 sts, sc * repeat * to * 16 (20, 24, 28, 32) more times. Turn. Total. 17 (21, 25, 29, 33) chain-spaces.
Row 2: Chain 5, skip 2 sts, sc, *ch5, skip 5 sts, sc, skip 3 sts, 7dc in the next ch-sp, skip 3sts, sc, ch5, skip 5 sts, sc* repeat * to * 3 (4, 5, 6, 7) more times, ch2, skip 2 sts, dc. Turn.
Row 3: Chain 1, sc in same st, ch5, skip 5 sts, sc, * [skip 3 sts, *(dc, ch2)* repeat * 5 more times, dc, skip 3 sts, sc, ch5, skip 5 sts, sc]* repeat * to * 3 (4, 5, 6, 7) more times. Turn.
Row 4: Chain 5 (count as dc, ch2), skip 2 sts, *[sc, ch2, skip 4 stitches, *in the chain-sp dc puff stitch, ch2, skip st* repeat * to* 4 more times, dc puff stitch, ch2, skip 4 sts]* repeat * to * 3 (4, 5, 6, 7) more times, sc, ch2, skip 2 sts dc. Turn.
Row 5: Chain 1, sc in same stitch, ch5, skip 6 sts, *sc in first ch-sp after the first dc puff stitch, ch5, skip next dc puff stitch, sc, ch5, skip next 2 dc puff stitches, sc, ch5, skip next puff stitch, sc, ch5, skip 7 sts* repeat * to * 2 (3, 4, 5, 6) more times, sc in first ch-sp after the first dc puff stitch, ch5, skip next dc puff stitch, sc, ch 5, skip next 2 dc puff stitches, sc, ch5, skip next puff stitch, sc, chain 5, skip 6 sts sc. Turn.
Repeat rows 2-5 until you make 10 repeats of the pattern in total and then add an extra repeat if you would like you top to be longer in length.
Don’ t forget to LEAVE A LONG TAIL OF 1 METER because you will use this to seam the sides together. Block your panel and repeat to make the back panel.
joining and finishing off
To join your tunic together you will need to place the front and back panel on top of each other with the foundation tail on either side because as we turned after each row there is no defined front or back to this design.
You’ll then pick up the long tail left from the foundation chain and seam the shoulders together using the whip stitch just after the first half of either the first or second repeat depending of your preference as this will depend how big your neck line will be. Please don’t fasten off until you are happy and comfortable with the neck opening.
Then using the long tail from the end, seam the back and front panels together along the side up to 5 repeats, again you can alter this to your preferred size. Once you are happy you can then fasten off and weave in your ends.
BELT
- You’ll need to double your yarn for extra strength and durability. Chain 180 – 250 using a 4.5mm crochet hook
- Opyionall: embellish your belt by adding optional beads to the ends or tassels
- weave the belt through the tunic inline with your waist line.
